
In Want of a Smoother Ride
To say the recent investment market has been volatile would be an understatement. At the time of this writing, the stock and bond markets had rebounded significantly from the market lows of March, and continued towards record highs at the same time as the other sectors of the economy are negatively affected by COVID-19. Then, overnight, investment markets fell due to a) continued fears of the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic b) investors taking profit from previous gains c) uncertainty about the timeline of a COVID-19 vaccine d) all of the above e) none of the above? Perhaps by the time the "publish" button is hit on this post, another bounce-back will have occurred? Recent weeks continues to show how "timing the market" for optimal returns can be extremely difficult. Such market volatility may not be the experience you want for a portion of your money, and GICs can act as a risk balancer to your portfolio.
